HANDLEBAR
Multi position handlebar for Urban, Touring, Gravel and XC/Trail Mountain Biking. Custom made in the UK from 3AL - 2.5V titanium.
The handlebar can be made to suit 25.4mm and 31.8mm diameter stem clamp sizes with a 22.2mm diameter tube for brake, gear levers and grips. We recommend the use of handlebar stems which have high handlebar clamping forces due to the torque moment (turning force) generated by the handlebar. We have successfully used these handlebars with Ritchey WCS C220, WCS C260 and WCS Trail stems which also have knurling on the inside face of the stem clamp.
The 31.8mm diameter handlebar uses a central aluminium shim, both the titanium cross tube and aluminium shim have straight knurls to make sure the stem clamp gets a good 'grip' on the handlebar to prevent it from rotating in the stem clamp.
Weight varies on width but for guidance a 700mm wide handlebar weighs about 500 grams. The handlebar passes and exceeds BS EN ISO 4210 for Mountain Bikes, a Ritchey WCS Trail stem was used as part of the test.
Standard dimensions are shown on the diagram below. But can be summarised as 700mm wide with a 35 Degree back sweep and 60 Degree front sweep and 10 Degree up sweep on the front extensions. Other dimensions are available on request.
When fitted to the bike the handlebar needs to be installed so that the grips slope back and downwards slightly. You will also need to consider installing a slightly longer stem and also raise your handlebars as the handlebar does not have any rise. From experience the stem needs to be about 20mm longer and 10 degrees higher than the current one your bike. We do not recommend using these handlebars with short 50mm and 70mm stems as this would move your hands behind the steering axis of your bike!
We have found that a stem length of 100 to 110mm works well with a 0 or 17 degrees angle on mountain bikes for trail riding.
ODI Longneck SLX 160mm flangeless grips work very well with the handlebar. ESI XL 6.75"/XXL 8.25" Chunky and Extra Chunky silicon grips also work well and can be cut down to suit the handlebar and controls if required.
